Arline Fisch

Arline Fisch (born 1931) was born in New York City. She learned to sew and weave from her mother and picked up a passion for the color red from her father while growing up in New York. She studied at Skidmore College, receiving her B.S. in Art in 1952. She received her M.A. in Art in 1954 from the University of Illinois. After teaching for two years at Wheaton College, she traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark, on a Fulbright Grant to study silversmithing. She has received three additional Fulbright grants, one to conduct further research in Denmark and two to lecture in Austria and Uruguay. She has taught at Wheaton College, Skidmore College and San Diego State University, where she retired in 2000. She has exhibited extensively all over the world in group shows and solo exhibitions.

Arline Fisch is best known for the way she handles metal in her pieces. Her book, Textile Techniques in Metal for Jewellers, Textile Artists and Sculptors, is a demonstration of the techniques she developed while trying to combine the textures of weaving with a metal material. She works with thin wire to create forms that have been manipulated in similar ways to knitted or braided fabric. She has cited jewellery of ancient cultures as being a continued reference and inspiration for her work.

Design Duo Create Mind-Blowing Thread and Nail Portraits

Design duo Pamela Campagna and husband Thomas Scheiderbauer of L-able created these two intricate thread portraits using old family photographs. Each piece took nearly a month, beginning with the large family portrait using black thread and moving on to the multi-toned woman. I’m such a sucker for this kind of work, being drawn to the geometry that’s used to create the organic shapes.

Welded Steel Sculptures by Frank Plant

Frank Plant is a Barcelona based American sculptor. He studied sculpture at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After finishing his B.A. in fine arts in 1993 he moved to Amsterdam and during this period he began to develop his drawings in steel. These are simple and direct studies of the forms and compositions of everyday objects. Welded steel has always been the principal medium for Plant’s work, whether in his two dimensional pieces such as his fingerprints series or his earlier three dimensional kinetic metal sculptures, that incorporate found objects.

In 1999 Plant moved to Barcelona and began to diversify the materials he uses in his sculpture. Photography and painted wooden backgrounds, light boxes, motors, sensors, sound and music have all become integral parts of his sculptures. In investigating new ways of communicating with the viewer, interactivity continues to play an increasingly central role in Plant’s work. Since 2000 he has taught at Metafora Tallers de Art Contemporani in Barcelona. His work is in private and public collections throughout Europe and North America.
